How Do You Make Spending Decisions?

"Are you buying what you truly DESIRE?"

“Are you buying what you truly DESIRE?”

Sooo, I want to take a minute today to discuss how you make spending decisions… and I think you’ll see that in the end, it really has nothing to do with money at all. ;)

Let’s be honest, the majority of us make decisions based on how much money we have (or don’t have) in our bank account. Or we make our decisions based on some arbitrary evaluation about how “expensive” something is. (For example, to one person a $200 sweater may seem absurd, while to another person it may seem like a great deal!)

Most of us, though, are not really in the habit of buying things we truly, truly want. Even people who are addicted to shopping are not TRULY buying things based on a legitimate desire – they are buying something to fill some sort of void or emptiness inside and shopping is their drug.

One of the biggest transformations I’ve noticed in myself in healing my relationship money and helping others do the same is that I no longer make my financial decisions purely based on how much something costs or how much money I have. This is HUGE!

Now I make my decisions based on how much I DESIRE something and whether or not it lights me up.

If the answer is definitely a YES, then I know I truly want it and I can figure out the money piece. However, the first step is figuring out if I really want it in the first place.

Here’s How It Works:

First, I think of something I’m considering purchasing. For me, this is normally something like a ticket to a business or personal growth conference, or personal development or money books, although lately this has started looking more and more like pedicures, massages, clothes that really represent the real me, etc!

Next, when I’ve thought of something I’m thinking about buying, I really tune in and figure out how I FEEL about that particular thing or item.

Does it light me up?

Am I excited about it?

More importantly, when I think about it do I feel a sense of E-X-P-A-N-S-I-O-N or is it more like contraction and

Really tune in and notice what comes up for you, especially if you’ve never done this before!

The Money Is Always There…

If something is truly lighting you up, and you feel a sense of expansion when thinking about it, then that signifies that this is a true DESIRE for you, i.e. this is not some sort of an impulse buy, or something you think you should buy, or something you’re buying to fill some internal sense of need or emptiness. This is a true desire for you, which will add to your life in some way. (This doesn’t have to be a HUGE thing either; it can be dinner with a close friend that fills your need for companionship and getting out of the house.)

And when you are connected with a true DESIRE, i.e. something that is really meant for you, the money is always there.

Always.

And if it’s not sitting in your bank account right now, it will come.

You’ll be lead to take an action or set of actions that will lead you to get the money. You might be inspired to call an old friend who owes you money, or all of a sudden you decide to hold a workshop that sells out. The possibilities are endless and you need to follow up on the divine inspirations you get, because most likely that’s what your money is if you don’t have it already.

You would not have the desire without the means to fulfill it.

In The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Deepak Chopra writes:

“Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment.”

(This is the Law of Intention and Desire).

This means that if you truly have a DESIRE for something, the way to get it is also here.

As I have said before, sometimes the “way” to get the money may require you to grow and step out of your comfort zone (usually it does!), but your desire and the money are there for you and waiting for you to step up and claim them.

I encourage you to begin making financial decisions from this place of DESIRE (and a state of abundance), rather than the place of how much is in your bank account (and a state of lack). What this does is eventually help you take money entirely out of the equation, so that you’re buying things you truly value and desire to have in your life, rather than what you think you can afford.

If you don’t know where to start this process, simply ask yourself, “What would I do, be, or have if money were no object?” That will begin to lead you in the right direction and illuminate what the true wishes and desires of your heart are.

And once you begin to actually give yourself PERMISSION to have those things in your life, watch out world!! You will be unstoppable!

(Like I said, it really has very little to do with money… ;)
